New Study Demonstrates Nova Max® Plus Meter (SMBG) Is Most Accurate Glucose Meter
Waltham, MA (September 22, 2011) – Nova Max Plus proved to be more accurate than other leading brand self-monitoring blood glucose meters (SMBG) in a study presented September 14th, 2011 at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). The study was performed by the Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Center, University of Ulster, Ulster, Northern Ireland.
The first part of the study determined the total error of each meter and the effect of hematocrit (Hct) interference and non-glucose sugars (Maltose, Galactose and Xylose) on glucose measurements of various SMBG meters. Nova Max Plus demonstrated the least total error (8.5%) versus 9.5% for AccuChek Aviva, 9.5% for Ascensia Breeze, 15.5% for Optium Xceed, and 16.6% for Ultra One Touch. Nova Max Plus was not affected by Hct interference or that caused by non-glucose sugars. AccuChek Aviva, Ascencia Breeze, Optimum Xceed and One Touch Ultra were each affected by Hct, with total error as high as 47% at abnormal hematocrit levels. Maltose, galactose and xylose interfered significantly with AccuChek Aviva, and to a lesser extent the One Touch Ultra.
In the second part of the study, Nova Max Plus was directly compared to One Touch Ultra in a diabetic patient evaluation. Nova Max Plus performed best versus widely recognized International Standards Organization accuracy criteria (ISO 15197). At patient glucose values less than 75 mg/dL, 100% of Nova Max Plus and One Touch Ultra data fell within ISO accuracy guidelines of ± 15 mg/dL versus a reference method. At patient glucose values greater than 75 mg/dL, ISO 15197 requires 95% of glucose values to be within ±20% of the reference method. Nova Max Plus exceeded ISO 15197 requirements for patient values above 75 mg/dL, with 97% of data within ±20% of the reference method. One Touch Ultra performance fell short of ISO 15197 requirements, with only 93% of data within ±20% of the reference method.
Inaccurate glucose readings due to Hct interference, maltose interference or other factors can increase the risk of inappropriate management of diabetes. Nova Max Plus was shown to be unaffected by Hct or non-glucose sugars, and provided the least total error of the meters tested.
